“Omigod You Guys”: Legally Blonde is pretty in pink as it opens at Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre

Legally Blonde is back in London, transported into the modern world of 2022. With updated characters, lines and attitudes, this production defies expectations and is an absolute must-see.

Legally Blonde, based on the classic 2000s film starring Reese Witherspoon, is a story of empowerment. Elle Woods, a sorority girl is broken up with by her boyfriend. In an effort to win him back and prove she is “serious", she follows him all the way to Harvard Law School. Throughout the show, Elle proves that with hard work, anyone can do anything; and do it all in complete pink.

Courtney Bowman shines effortlessly as Elle Woods. Her comedic timing is impeccable, having the whole audience in fits of laughter with a slight head nod or wink; even a well-timed breath would have entertained the crowd. She captures the true spirit of Elle, showing compassion, brains and being a complete pink powerhouse. Her vocals are outstanding, especially in the showstopping Act 1 finale “So Much Better”.

Michael Ahomka-Lindsay is adorable as Emmett Forest. He shows the dorky side, the cool side, the friend, the love interest and all while singing his heart out. His added riffs in “Chip on Your Shoulder” were such a delightful surprise’ it was very hard not to fall in love with him. Alistair Toovey stars as Warner and makes you fall in love with him and hate him at the same time. His comedic moments have the audience in fits of laughter.

A massive shout out has to go to Lauren Drew who must not be human as she skips for a whole number while singing her heart out. It's a wonder how she does half of the intricate moves let alone belt the notes that she does. Vanessa Fisher stars as Vivienne, who’s vocals in “Legally Blonde Remix” were spectacular. Nadine Higgin was hilarious as Paulette, another outstanding performance that had the audience gasping for breath between fits of laughter.

The entire cast are a must-see, all with thriving careers ahead of them. Any member that you look at is performing their heart out and you could easily spend the entire time watching a different person every time you go. Special shoutout goes to Billy Nevers who seemed to capture attention easily with his immense stage presence.

With this new production comes many changes. We have a diverse cast of performers, matching the 2022 Harvard experience, which is such a delight to see and something that should be seen in more shows in the future. Some changes were a bit unnecessary, with some lines being changed for no particular reason, iconic choreography changed and simplified, and some moments did feel like a Netflix original movie parent, trying to be “woke” but overall, the show is not one to miss.
